Planet Fitness advertises itself as a “judgement free zone,” but that’s not just a slogan. Looks like the gym chain actually lives up to its promise. When one woman repeatedly complained about seeing a transgender woman in the women’s locker room, the Midland County Planet Fitness told her that she could either be accepting of all the gym’s members or get out.
On February 28, Yvette Cormier went to the front desk of her local Planet Fitness to complain about seeing “a man” in the locker room. When the front desk employee informed her that the person was actually a trans woman, Cormier still wasn’t satisfied. She took her complaint to the corporate office, where she was told that Planet Fitness allows all people to use the locker room that corresponds with their gender identity. After multiple more complaints to the local branch, Cormier’s membership with Planet Fitness was terminated.
A statement released by Planet Fitness’s PR director reads:
Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled.
