On Friday night (March 6), a police officer in Madison, Wisconsin fatally shot 19-year-old Anthony Robinson. The New York Times reports that Robinson, who was black, was unarmed.
“The initial finding at the scene did not reflect a gun or anything of that nature that would have been used by the subject,” Madison police chief Mike Koval told reporters.
According to Madison’s local news affiliate WMTV, the officer was called when Robinson was jumping into traffic. The officer then followed Robinson into an apartment, and shot him after a struggle broke out.
“Before we arrived, the call was updated by another complainant who indicated that this same subject was responsible for a battery,” Koval added. “This same subject then assaulted my officer and in the context of mutual combat, the officer did draw his revolver and subsequently shot the subject.”
Authorities were not releasing Robinson’s identity at the time, but Michael Johnson, the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, revealed Robinson’s name and photo on his Facebook page.
This shooting comes eight months after the choking death of Eric Garner, and seven after the shooting death of Michael Brown. Today (March 7) is also the 50-year anniversary of the beginning of the historical Selma to Montgomery marches, which several mourners have already noted on Twitter.
Protests broke out Friday night in Madison — which the Robinson family later joined, asking organizers to remain peaceful — and have continued into Saturday.
