Up until now, we’ve been thoroughly impressed with the awesome casting decisions made for “Independence Day 2.” Liam Hemsworth as a butt-kicking alien killer? Amazing. Jessie Usher, a.k.a. Will Smith 2.0, as Steven Hiller’s son? Love it. Bringing back Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman, AND Jeff Goldblum? DING DING DING, WINNER!
But in a shocking, off-putting move, it was announced yesterday (April 27) that the role of President Whitmore’s daughter — played in the original 1996 movie by Mae Whitman — has gone to Maika Monroe.
Allow us to clarify: this isn’t confusing because of Monroe herself. Her breakout role in “It Follows” earlier this year proved she’s a talented actress. The perplexing part is that Whitman is not only still a working actress, but a damn good one at that.
Needless to say, a lot of fans expressed their disappointment over the decision, rightfully pointing out that Whitman should’ve at least been on the short list of actresses to reprise her part (which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, she was not).
No one pointed this out better and more succinctly than Anna Kendrick, who took to Twitter to voice her dissent.
Retweeting an article that announced Monroe as Whitman’s replacement, Kendrick brought up a valid point: Whitman recently starred in “The DUFF,” carrying it to a $10 million opening and proving herself a capable leading lady. So why SHOULDN’T she have been chosen to reprise her role?
It’s not clear whether Whitman was ever up for the part or not, but judging by her own tweets from today, it appears she’s as sad and surprised as everyone else. She first responded to Kendrick with a teary-eyed smiley face, saying, “Man. I love you to death kid. :,)”
Later, she responded to a HitFix writer with a series of broken heart emojis. The HitFix article suggests Monroe may have replaced Whitman because she’s more of a conventionally “pretty” actress, which we certainly hope isn’t the case.
Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt Whitman has a long and stellar career ahead of her, blockbuster sequels be damned.
