When a packed full house of theaters owners, exhibitors, journalists and more entered the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Thursday (April 23) for the 20th Century Fox CinemaCon presentation, we knew that “Fantastic Four,” “Paper Towns” and “Spy” were all part of the agenda. What we weren’t necessarily counting on, however, was the first official trailer for the second installment in “The Maze Runner” series, “The Scorch Trials.” And boy, did it deliver.
Fans of James Dashner’s book series know that “Scorch Trials” picks up right where “Maze Runner” left off, with Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and the gang being led to a top-secret WCKD location near the miles of uninhabitable desert land called The Scorch. The film seems to be going a similar route, but with a few notable differences — most notably, when Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger from “Game of Thrones”) shows up to recruit Thomas to WCKD’s cause, Thomas and his gang run away instead of taking part in another trial. (Though that could have been WCKD’s plan all along. You never know.)
The trailer also showed jaw-droppingly gorgeous images of the massive Scorch itself, which is actually just the solar-flared ruins of a major modern city. We also got to see a bunch of humans (Gladers?) being brutally strung upside down by WCKD, a mysterious group of survivors from other mazes, like Jacob Lofland as Aris Jones, “Breaking Bad” star Giancarlo Esposito as a “crank” named Jorge, and a steamy kiss between Thomas and Teresa (Kaya Scodelario).
There wasn’t too much crank stuff overall — and cranks are basically zombies who were affected by a virus called The Flare, FYI — but all in all, the “Scorch Trials” trailer looked even bigger and better than the first film. Be sure to check it out when it hits theaters on September 18!
