February’s Super Bowl XLIX stands as the most-watched broadcast in American television history, but in 2010, we got reason to believe an episode of “The Hills” rightly deserved the distinction.
Exactly five years ago, on the premiere of the show’s sixth season, Heidi Montag — who’d recently undergone nearly a dozen plastic surgery procedures in tandem — traveled to her parents’ home in Colorado to unveil her new look, which included massive breast implants, pinned-back ears and a series of fat injections into her face. Heidi’s mother Darlene tried to be diplomatic as she reacted to the jarring change, but soon, both she and her daughter were reduced to tears.
In a clip from the scene below, Heidi chronicles her operations in a strikingly offhand tone, and when she asks her mother for sincere feedback, things get tense.
“To everybody else that saw you, you were Heidi — nobody in the world could’ve looked like Heidi Montag,” Darlene said.
“Are you telling me you don’t think I look good?” Heidi asked.
“…That’s a terrible thing for me to say, but yes, that’s how I feel, I thought that you were much more beautiful before,” Darlene responded.
Heidi cut off communication from her family in the months that followed but experienced a “self-awakening” in 2012, during which she reunited with her parents and siblings. And, in 2013, she told ET that she ultimately regretted at least some of her choices — chiefly, her implants.
“They look great and they sound fun, but once you get them, that’s it, you’ve done the damage,” she explained. “Is that vanity worth….harming yourself?”
