Kim Kardashian supports Bruce Jenner “100 percent.”
Following his historic interview with Diane Sawyer in which he confirmed that he is transgender, Bruce Jenner’s stepdaughter Kim Kardashian took to Twitter praising him for his honesty and bravery.
On Monday, (April 27) the reality star — who Bruce said was the “most accepting” of his coming out — sat down with Matt Lauer on the “Today Show” and revealed that she is behind Bruce all the way.
“I’m just really happy for him that he is living his life the way he wants to live it and that he has found inner peace and just pure happiness — that’s what life is about,” she said. “I don’t know what life would be like if you always felt like you weren’t yourself, and I know it’s not something you or I could fully understand, but I don’t even think we have to. I think as long as he is happy and he wants to live his life however he wants to live it — that just makes me happy and I support him 100 percent.”
Kim said that her family has experienced “every emotion” while processing the news of Bruce’s gender identity, but, contrary to reports, they were always supportive.
“I see reports that say this one doesn’t support him and this one’s over here and my mom feels this way — and it’s all really so made-up. We all really support him,” she said. “Is it a hard adjustment? Yes. … It’s a daily process.”
To help them sort through it all, the family has teamed up with GLADD to help them learn how to be “supportive” and “respectful,” but, understandably, it will take time, which is something Bruce completely understands.
“Bruce wants us to feel as comfortable as possible and take everything at our own pace — and we love him for that. We respect him. … Until that transition is done, we learned that you do refer to him as him,” she explained. “But Bruce has always been really, really good at explaining everything to us even though [they’re] really new — not newer feelings for him, but for us to digest. He has done a really good job at walking us through it.”
Kim, whose husband Kanye West helped her with the news, feels that Bruce is “ready for the challenge” that faces him. “I think when you are finally ready to be your true self, then you’re prepared for anything,” she said.
“I think [Bruce] is ready for the challenge and ready to help other people… that might be going through the same things that he’s going through. And that’s something that he’s really proud of and something that he’s really ready to take on,” she said. “And I’m really proud of him for that.”
Editors note: While Bruce Jenner has stated that he identifies as a woman, we have used the male pronoun throughout this article in keeping with his current stated pronoun preference.
