The Star Wars spin-off will focus on a group of rebels who plot to steal blueprints for the battle station.
LucasFilm released an official synopsis, which read: "a band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to "steal the Death Star plans."
Director Gareth Edwards spoke about the film at a special Star Wars Celebration panel, Yahoo! News reports.
He revealed that the "resistance fighters" would be without "magical powers", saying: "The absence of the Jedi hangs over the movie".
Rogue One is to star Felicity Jones, with Ben Mendelsohn also rumoured to star in the film.
Rogue One's story from screenwriter Chris Weitz will be set outside of the Star Wars saga, but within the wider universe of the series.
Alexandre Desplat will work on the film's score, instead of John Williams who is tied into scoring The Force Awakens and Episode VIII.
Rogue One opens on December 16, 2016.
