Speaking to Digital Spy, the actor mused on how "strange" Damon's situation is following Elena's confession of love for him in the season four finale.

"He got the girl, at a great expense," Somerhalder said. "It's gotta be so strange for this guy. He was so in love with Katherine for so many years, working off the naivety of a 23-year-old man.
"To be in love with this woman who really broke your heart, and then all of a sudden to find a woman who is identical in every way, shape and form, who is 160 years his junior.
"What I love about [their relationship this season] is that it's something the audience has really been wanting to see for a long time. But bear in mind that this is The Vampire Diaries, so people being happy for long doesn't exist."

Somerhalder went on to describe being on the show as "like being in a marriage. It's a relationship. It's almost ten months a year."
Asked about his feelings on the upcoming fifth season, he admitted that he is "envious" of co-star Paul Wesley, who will once again be playing an evil alternate version of his character Stefan.
The Vampire Diaries' fifth season will premiere on The CW on October 3, followed by the first episode of spin-off series The Originals .
