Gillian Anderson: 'Fans should push for third X-Files movie'

Gillian Anderson has urged fans to start a campaign for a third X-Files movie.

The actress, who starred alongside David Duchovny in the sci-fi hit from 1993 to 2002, told The AP that it could take "fan encouragement" to get Twentieth Century Fox interested in a third feature instalment of the series.

Reuniting with Duchovny at an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the launch of The X-Files, Anderson said: "If it takes fan encouragement to get Fox interested in that then I guess that's what it would be."

Duchovny added: "All the principals are on board. Gillian and I want to do it, so it's really up to Twentieth Century Fox at this point."

Series creator Chris Carter is also keen to revisit the characters of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, having previously suggested that a third movie would deal with the aftermath of the December 22, 2012 colonisation date mentioned in the series.

Twentieth Century Fox did not respond to a request for comment, The AP reports.

Commenting on the relationship between their characters, Duchovny suggested that Mulder and Scully were married in the 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe. However, Anderson was not sure of the specifics.

She said: "Were we actually married?" Duchovny replied: "I believe so. That was my impression."

Anderson and Duchovny recently appeared together for a Comic Con Q&A marking 20 years of The X-Files.
