Speaking to ARN , the company's Surface product manager Jack Cowett claimed the name was dropped in favour of Surface 2 to make it easier for consumers.
"We think that there was some confusion in the market last year on the difference between Surface RT and Surface Pro," Cowett said.
"We want to help make it easier for people, and these are two different products designed for two different people."
Microsoft reportedly lost $900 million on the Surface RT, a scaled-down variant of the Windows 8 operating system which is limited to Microsoft Office and some system utilities.
The Surface 2 will run Windows RT with an added full HD screen, improved settings and options access within the 'Metro-style' view, as well as a new two-stage kickstand to provide better viewing angles on the user's lap.
"We got quite a lot of really good feedback from the original Surface Pro, but one thing people said to us was, 'Hey, if you really want us to use this thing on your lap, you need to make it easier to use as a laptop," Cowett added.
"We've added a second angle for the kickstand, so it's much more comfortable to use on your lap. It's a tiny change, but it makes a huge difference."
Major manufactures including Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Samsung are yet to reveal any new Windows RT-based products, leaving the operating system's future uncertain.
Nokia is the only company rumoured to be announcing the Lumia 2520 tablet with Windows RT at its Nokia World event on October 22, but the device has not officially been announced and any product would be put in Microsoft's ownership by next year as it acquires Nokia.
