"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." may be only three episodes into its run, but the show was still able to fill New York Comic Con's largest stage with more than 3,000 screaming fans on Saturday. And not only did MTV News get to see this week's brand-new episode, but we also learned quite a bit about the show's upcoming interaction with the Marvel movie universe:
There's More Movie Characters Coming
Most of the Q&A portion of the panel was taken up with whether we'd see more movie characters on the show — like how Samuel Jackson's Nick Fury showed up a few weeks prior — and whether we'd see the Agents showing up in movies. According to Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb, both are a possibility. "If somebody wants to come play, we're more than happy to figure out how to make that work in the story," said Loeb about bringing movie stars like Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. onto the set.
They're Not An 'Easter Egg Farm'
That said, Loeb wanted to emphasize they're not just looking to set up the Love Boat with superheroes. "There are more things headed your way," said Loeb. "But as Joss [Whedon] says, we haven't created an Easter Egg farm. In the pilot it was important that Cobie [Smulders] play Maria Hill to reintroduce Coulson."
...But Will The Agents Show Up On Screen?
"The longer we're on the air, the greater that possibility becomes," said Loeb, adding that up until 48 hours before the panel, they didn't know if the show would get a full season. The plan, he stated, was to let the show weave in and out of the movies, and now they'll get to see that to fruition.
What About That Cellist?
Avid "Avengers" fans will remember the cellist Agent Phil Coulson said he was dating in the movie, before he was struck down by Loki's blade. Don't worry, we're going to get to meet her: "There isn't anything that Joss Whedon has written that we're not going to mine all the way down to the bottom of the mine," quipped Loeb.
The Show Isn't 'LOST'
Putting in a dig against 'LOST,' Loeb said that all of the mysteries brought up in the first season will come together and be answered by the end of the 22 episodes. "There is a plan," said Loeb. "You don't have to wait another five or six years to find out if it's an island or a turtle."
Fitz And Simmons Aren't Related Or Dating
The two tech nerds on the show played by Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker aren't related, and aren't dating. "They do have a brother-sister relationship," said De Caestecker, who plays Fitz. "And you say they have an old married relationship," he said turning to Henstridge. "An old... married... brother-sister relationship," joked Loeb. Still, there's a split coming soon between the two.
It's Filmed On Location
Though the show doesn't have the budget for "30 Iron Men to show up and save the day," according to Loeb, they are able to film on location in Europe thanks to a partnership with the BBC. The pilot episode was actually shot in Paris, and this week's episode opener was filmed on location in Stockholm.
This Week's Episode Is Fun
The bulk of the panel was taken up with showing off this week's new episode, "Eye-Spy." We won't ruin the twists and turns, but not only is it a lot of fun — writer Jeff Bell's quips hit hard, and the action is pretty excellently filmed — but we also learn a big piece of the mystery behind Coulson's return from death. Hint: it might've happened to Ming-na Wen's Agent May too.
Henstridge Has A Solution To Marvel's Loki Problem
"I just think he needs a sit-down with a cup of tea, and a hug. He needs someone to talk to. And I could do that," said Henstridge on how to stop Tom Hiddleston's Loki from being so evil. With Hiddleston saying he'd be open to an "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appearance, we may actually get to see this scene.
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is on ABC Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
