Here are five things to know about the ceremony:

1. When and where can I see the show?

The awards show will air live on ABC from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles from at 8-11 p.m. ET (with a tape-delay on the West Coast).

2. Who will be performing?

Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus are among the singers set to take the stage at Sunday night's American Music Awards. Perry will open the show with her latest single, "Unconditionally," while Cyrus is planning to close the ceremony with what will most certainly be yet another headline-making performance on the heels of her twerking stunt at the Video Music Awards and her lighting up a joint at the MTV European Music Awards. Other performers scheduled to take the stage include Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

3. Who is nominated?

Macklemore and Lewis are the fan-voted AMAs' top nominees this year with six, while Swift and Timberlake have five apiece. All three acts are up for top honor artist of the year, along with Rihanna and Bruno Mars. Swift and Justin Bieber, who is not nominated this year, have alternated victories in the category the last four years, cashing in on their rabid, social media-driven fan bases. Only the adventurous would vote against Swift this year. Timberlake has the year's top-selling album and Macklemore and Lewis tickled everyone's fancy with "Thrift Shop." But the category winner has been either young or country since the award's inception in 2004. Swift is both.

4. Who is the host?

Pitbull will serve as host of the ceremony. He also will perform with Ke$ha.

5. What else is planned for the show?

Rihanna will receive the first AMA Icon Award, which was created to "honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level," producer Larry Klein said when making the announcement. "Rihanna's iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and best-selling artists of all time."

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez will offer a tribute to Cuban salsa singer and musical legend Celia Cruz, who died from a brain tumor 10 years ago. Lopez will give a tribute performance that will include Cruz’s greatest hits, in Spanish. “I felt very honored and a little scared, I don’t think there is anything better for this year’s AMA,” Lopez told the Associated Press of being asked to take part. “I know that a lot of fans who will watch the show will know who she was, but we will also educate a lot of people reminding them of the impact she had in the music scene, not just in Latin American countries, but also in the United States.”
