Paul Hollywood to undergo surgery on hands: 'Baking has knackered me'

Paul Hollywood is to undergo surgery on his hands after revealing that he is suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.

The The Great British Bake Off judge said that 30 years as a baker led to the condition, which has left him with nerve damage in his wrists.

Mail Online quotes him as saying at London's Good Food Show: "I went to get it tested about two years ago and they gave me electric shock treatment from your finger down to your elbow to see how severe it is.

"The doctor said, 'If you don't have an operation you will no longer have feeling in your hands for the rest of your life'."

He continued: "I have been wearing wrist strengtheners on both my wrists. Thirty years of baking has now knackered me and I have to go for an operation to have them sorted."

Hollywood also revealed that his co-star Mary Berry had gone through with the surgery in the past and had encouraged him to have the operation to ease pain and numbness in his hands.

The 47-year-old added: "[Mary] said it really hurt and absolutely killed her. But I think she is winding me up."

Earlier this month, Hollywood admitted to having an affair, describing it as "the biggest mistake" of his life.

The Great British Bake Off will return for its fifth series next year on BBC One.
