Maurice 'Mad Dog' Vachon with his brother Paul
Vachon was one of the most well-known heels in the American Wrestling Association and led the Vachon family, being the brother of Paul and Vivian and uncle of Luna.
Paul told Slam Wrestling today: "This is not a pleasure call. I just wanted to call and let you know first that my brother Mad Dog passed away this morning."
Mad Dog made his debut in 1950, winning several titles before his retirement in 1986.
Starting off as an amateur wrestler, he competed at the 1948 London Olympics, winning seventh place in the 78kg class.
He went on to win gold at the British Empire Games as a middleweight freestyle wrestler two years later.
Vachon had suffered various health issues after losing a leg after being hit by a car when out for a jog in 1987.
Post-retirement, he appeared at WWF pay-per-view events including In Your House 7 in 1996, where his prosthetic leg was used as a weapon by Diesel in his match against Shawn Michaels.
Vachon was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2010 and you can watch his induction speech below:
