'Batman Arkham' Teases Villain Mr. Freeze's Origin

Last week we reported on an upcoming New Year's Eve tease from the creators of the "Batman Arkham" games, musing on whether there would be a new game, more story content, or just Batman dressed in 2014 glasses. Well, now a second tease has gone up that seems to indicate we'll soon be playing out the origin of a major Batman villain: Mr. Freeze.

The cold-oriented bad guy doesn't appear in the recently released "Batman: Arkham Origins," nor does he feature in "Batman: Arkham Asylum," the original game in the series. However, Freeze is a major character in "Arkham City," the third game chronologically. What we haven't seen, though, is Freeze's origin... And if we're putting the clues together correctly, that's just what we'll get in the upcoming "Arkham Origins" expansion.

The new teaser image is an invitation to the "Humanitarian of the Year Awards," a gala "honoring Gotham's greatest" at Wayne Manor, home of Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman. In one of the most famous episodes of "Batman: The Animated Series," Gothcorp CEO Ferris Boyle is given the "Humanitarian Industrialist of The Year" award, only to be attacked by Mr. Freeze.

It turns out Boyle isn't such a nice guy: he not only stole Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze's real name) cryogenic formula, he also kicked him into a vat of chemicals, causing Freeze to change into his villainous form.

The story in the game is pretty much the same, with Boyle causing Freeze's origin; something that's revealed when you scan Freeze's prison cell in "Arkham Asylum." However, this is only revealed in a text bio, and we've never actually gotten to play the moment Batman stopped Freeze from killing Boyle, and sent the villain to Arkham.

So are we piecing everything together correctly? Is Mr. Freeze's origin going to be the big reveal for the downloadable content? Given Warner Brother's previous tease that this would play off a major relationship in the Batman universe, it certainly fit the clues. Whether we'll know more before the ball drops tonight, or in the New Year? Stay tuned.
