Marvel revamps apps for SXSW with audio, AR integration

Marvel Comics has unveiled a revamp of its apps at South by Southwest.

The company will integrate its Marvel AR and Marvel Unlimited into one app, which will also include the long-awaited Project Gamma audio feature.

Marvel will also launch a free Ultimate Spider-Man app for kids, which will feature content from Eugene Son, Matt Kindt, Cullen Bunn, Tim Seeley, JL Mast, Geoffrey Beulieu, Luciano Vecchio and Soutchey Leimetry (according to Bleeding Cool ).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be the first title to receive the adaptive audio treatment - with the sound transitioning seamlessly as readers progress through the comic.


The Marvel Augmented Reality feature will now be integrated as part of the digital reading experience, beginning with Jonathan Hickman's Avengers run, according to ComicBook.com .

Readers will no longer be required to hover their device over the appropriate pages of print comics in order to access the AR features.

The AR and audio features can also be disabled in the app settings.


Project Gamma was first announced at SXSW 2013.
