Microsoft announces Office for iPad in move towards cloud growth

Microsoft has officially announced that its Office suite will launch on rival platform iPad.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint will be available to download from the App Store today (March 27), Microsoft Office general manager Julia White announced in a San Francisco event focused on the company's cloud growth.

The apps will enable users to read and present content for free, while they can create content with a paid Office 365 subscription costing £79.99 a year. Existing Office 365 customers can access the apps in full at no extra cost.

As part of the move, the existing Office apps available for iPhone and Android devices are now completely free for home users.

A collaboration feature is on board, meaning multiple users can share and see markups and edits of documents or presentations via OneDrive.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has incorporated a custom numeric keyboard on Excel, making equations and formulas easier to type.

PowerPoint presentations also have a "virtual laser pointer", which allows users to point things out on-screen by touching and holding on slides.

"If only I had the real Office for iPad, I could get more done. Well it turns out, as of today, you do!" White revealed.

The conference marked the first public speech from new CEO Satya Nadella, who opened with a focus on 'Users x Devices x Apps = Cloud Growth'.

"We've offered Office on the Mac for more than 20 years," he said. "Taking the next step and making it available for iPad users too is another way Office delivers on its promise to give anyone the power to make things, and make things happen, any moment of the day."

The PC maker also unveiled a new cloud service for businesses called the Enterprise Mobility Suite, which helps manage and secure corporate data and services on the devices people use at work and at home.
