Okinawa Film Fest: 'Ultrafast! Sankinkotai' and 'Miss Granny' Share The Spoils


Katsuhide Motoki’s Ultrafast! Sankinkotai and Hwang Dong-heuk’s Miss Granny took the jointly awarded top honors at the Okinawa International Movie Festival at the beachside Japanese festival on Saturday.


The event opened with a screening of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity on the beach on a giant open-air screen hired for the event from the Locarno Film Festival.


They two movies were honored in the twin "Laugh" and "Peace" categories, named for the theme of the festival. Both films were awarded cash prizes of $9,760 (1 million yen).


The best actor award went to Shido Nakamura, while best actress went to Manami Konishi and best movie went to Love Session. Winner of the Jury’ s Special Mention was One Third by Hiroshi Shinagawa.


Okinawa is strongly geared towards comedy and encouraging broad appeal, and mostly steers clear of the arty fare found at most festivals.

The next Okinawa festival will be held from Mar. 25 thru Mar. 29, 2015.
