Scott Kalvert, 'Basketball Diaries' Director, Dies at 49


Scott Kalvert, best known for directing 1995's The Basketball Diaries, died Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.


He was found in his home in Woodland Hills on Wednesday and pronounced dead at 1:55 p.m. The L.A. Coroner's Office is investigating the death as a possible suicide.

In addition to his work with Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg in Basketball Diaries, Kalvert was known for directing iconic music videos such as DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith's "Parents Just Don't Understand," Salt ‘N Pepa's “Shoop” and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch's “Good Vibrations."


He also directed the 2002 feature Deuces Wild, starring Stephen Dorff and Brad Renfro. His most recent credit was for the 2010 made-for-TV Nickelodeon musical School Gyrls, on which he served as an executive producer.


Donnie Wahlberg, whom Kalvert directed in New Kids on the Block's 1993 video "Dirty Dawg," remembered the director in a series of tweets Friday.
