Female troops were announced as a new addition to Call of Duty: Ghosts during the recent multiplayer unveiling in Los Angeles.
With the game's increased emphasis on customisation, senior executive producer Marcus Iremonger told Digital Spy that now was the perfect time to include both genders.
"It's really just that it's the right time for us with regards to what we're doing in the game," Iremonger explained
"In previous games you were randomly generated, but the idea here is that you get to choose.
"Players get to choose what they're wearing and how they look, so it was just the perfect time to say 'look, there are people out there who want to do this and we should give them the opportunity'.
"Otherwise we'd only be doing half of what we could do. This is a way in which everyone can define themselves."
Asked whether or not choosing between genders would affect gameplay, Iremonger continued: "In multiplayer, no, there's not going to be any differences, advantages or disadvantages in picking a female soldier."
Multiplayer adds seven new modes, more than 20 new killstreaks and over 30 new weapons, including a new weapon class.
New game types include Crank, Search and Destroy and Squads, which itself features various modes, supports up to six players on a team and contains in-game partners that are more human-like than in previous titles.
A new companion app was announced, as well as a Season Pass and Collector's Edition.
The multiplayer event also included a sneak peek of upcoming Eminem song 'Survival'.
Call of Duty: Ghosts will launch on November 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii U. It will also be available on next-gen consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One from their launches.
