When we take a look back at past red carpet seasons, no other decade has influenced celebrity hair and makeup quite like the 1940s. Sexy vintage waves, bright red lips and long lashes were made popular by Golden Age film stars Veronica Lake, Rita Hayworth and Vivien Leigh. And leading ladies of today, including Blake Lively, Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon, have modernized 1940s hair to wear with their floor-length gowns and sparkly diamonds.

1940s hair consisted of a general shape: sculpted, voluminous waves offset by a side-part. Victory rolls were a trendy addition that allowed women to pin up the front of their strands, show off their facial features and maintain length in the back. Everything from pipe cleaners to old pantyhose were used to create these '40s hairdos. However, hot rollers have made it much easier to get vintage waves and do your makeup today.

  • Before

  • Step 1

Starting with day-old hair (it allows for a better hold when using hot rollers as opposed to freshly-shampooed locks), apply Garnier Fructis Style Curl Enhancing Spray Gel and comb through. You can also use your favorite leave-in conditioner. Part your hair to the side.

  • Step 2

Grab one-inch sections of hair and start rolling on hot rollers (we used Infiniti Pro by Conair Instant Heat Ceramic Flocked Rollers) in the direction that you want to create the wave. We prefer directing the hair away from the face, curling the ends of the hair under the roller. Use smaller rollers along the hairline, and be sure to smooth flyways as you style.

  • Step 3

Once the entire head is set in hot rollers, spritz on a holding hairspray like Garnier Fructis Style Flexible Control Anti-Humidity Spray. If you have thick hair, allow rollers to set for up to 30 minutes. If you hair texture is really fine or thin, set for 10-15 minutes max.

  • Step 4

After hot rollers are completely cool, remove the rollers. Do not brush out yet. Spritz with hair spray and let the curls air dry for another 5 minutes.

  • Step 5

Take a boar bristle brush and gently brush out the curls, working section by section, creating waves.
