Katy Perry storms iTunes chart with 'Roar' after early release

Katy Perry has stormed to the top of the UK iTunes chart with new single 'Roar'.

The singer reached the number one spot with the lead single from her new album Prism after deciding to release the track early.

The song was originally due to be available from September 8, but Perry moved the date forward to this morning (September 1) since 'Roar' was already out in most other countries.

'Roar', which has so far peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, knocks Ellie Goulding's 'Burn' off the UK iTunes top spot.

Lady Gaga currently sits at number six with 'Applause', which was also rush-released following a leak last month.

Perry recently revealed that Prism, which is released on October 22, won't contain any "darkness", despite her previous descriptions of the record.

"I was saying that when I was going through a different phase, but I really let that light in," she explained. "The reason why I called this record Prism is because I actually finally let the light in."

Perry closes the iTunes Festival on September 30. Watch the lyric video for 'Roar' below:
