Apple retires iPad 2, revives iPad 4 as budget model

Apple has retried the iPad 2 and revived the fourth-generation iPad with Retina display as its new budget model.

The iPad 2 remained on sale three years since its launch as a cheaper alternative to the latest version, and was the last Apple tablet to feature a 30-pin connector.

All the iPads now use the smaller Lightning cable to charge, but the iPhone 4S still makes use of the older technology.

Apple retired the iPad 4 when the original iPad mini was unveiled, choosing to keep the second-generation device on as its entry-level offering.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicted the demise of the iPad 2 in November last year, forecasting that Apple will ship just 0.3 million units of the tablet in the current fiscal quarter.

Apple also added an 8GB iPhone 5C to its product range this week.
