The image, released to coincided with Mothering Sunday, also shows the third-in-line to the throne wearing a personalised blue jumper with 'George' written in white across the front.
The photograph was taken by celebrity photographer Jason Bell, who also captured Prince George's christening.
The last official picture of William and Kate and their now 8-month-old son was taken at the royal baby's christening at St James's Palace in October.
Bell is also known for photographing Hollywood and music stars, including Sir Paul McCartney, David Beckham and Scarlett Johansson.
Meanwhile, the christening marked the first time that Prince George had been seen in public since his birth last July.
