The final, which was contested by Sophie Thompson, Charley Boorman and Jodie Kidd, peaked with an audience of 5.79 million (29.8%) as the results were announced.
BBC One's evening kicked off with 2.75 million (17.1%) for The One Show at 7pm, followed by 2.91 million (16.8%) for The Village That's Falling into the Sea at 7.30pm.
Replacing The Graham Norton Show, New Tricks rounded off the evening with 1.9 million (16%) at 10.35pm.
After a mammoth session of golf on BBC Two, the channel drew 580k (3.2%) for live coverage of the First Night of the Proms at 8pm. An average audience of 830k (4.5%) stuck around to watch QI immediately after.
The Cruise Ship was ITV's highest-rated show outside of soaps, pulling in 2.77 million (15.7%) at 8pm. Doc Martin was seen by 2.27 million (12.2%) an hour later at 9.
Over on Channel 4, the latest episode of The Million Pound Drop attracted an average audience of 850k (4.7%) at 8pm, while Friday Night Dinner was seen by 690k (3.9%) at 10pm.
8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown was once again the channel's top-rated show, with average viewing figures of 1.28 million (6.8%).
The latest Big Brother live eviction saw Channel 5 attract 1.19 million and a 6.5% audience share.
An average of 820k (6.5%) stuck around to watch Big Brother's A Bit On the Side for the post-eviction fallout.
BBC Four's The Joy of the Guitar Riff was among the highest-rated multichannel shows, entertaining 707k (3.8%) at 9pm.
