Speaking about his arrival, Howman said: "It is an honour to have joined such an iconic show. I've had a lovely welcome.

"The twists and turns, character and plots that are coming make it all the more exciting for me."

EastEnders executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins added: "We have been trying to get Karl to join EastEnders for a very long time and it's fantastic that it's finally happened.

"An authentic Londoner with grit, sparkle and a touch of danger, Karl is the perfect fit for this new character. His appearance on the Square will open old wounds and reignite old passions."

As well as starring in Brush Strokes, the actor is known for playing the title character in Mulberry in the early '90s and for appearing in Flash adverts.
