iPhone 6 outscores iPhone 6 Plus in breakability test

Apple 's iPhone 6 has outscored the larger iPhone 6 Plus in a series of durability and breakability trials.

Warranty service SquareTrade subjected both handset to a battery of tests, and concluded that the 4.7-inch handset is more durable.

Weighing in heavier than the iPhone 6 at 172g, the iPhone 6 Plus slides further along plastic and wood surfaces, making it more likely to drop to the floor.

Both phones fared equally well when submerged in water with audio and video playing, the playback initially ceasing before returning within a few minutes in both cases.

The iPhone 6 sustained only superficial damage when dropped from a 4ft height six times, faring better than any other phone SquareTrade has subjected to this test.

The iPhone 6 Plus's display did not shatter during this test, but its front and back panels came apart, and audio playback ceased half an hour later.

SquareTrade assigned the iPhone 6 a breakability score of four out of ten - ten being the highest risk of sustaining damage - while the iPhone 6 Plus was rated at five out of ten.

The previous-generation iPhone 5S and the rival Samsung Galaxy S5 both scored six out of ten when subjected to the same tests.
