The singer and actor's manager confirmed that Stardust died this morning (October 23) after a short illness.
He had recently been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. Stardust died at his family home.
Stardust's career kicked off in 1973 with his debut hit 'My Coo Ca Choo', following it with chart-topper 'Jealous Mind'.
He had several hit singles and albums before a transition to musical theatre with roles in Godspell, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and David Copperfield.

"The chance came out of the blue. We got together for a one-off try at writing something. I was blown away with the result," Stardust said.
"Rich [Scott] and Scott [Ralph] are so very clever in both writing and the production. It was a no brainer that I should grab on to these great musos and crack on with more stuff."
He added: "They have brought out a completely hidden side of me and I love the darker, swampy blues edge that we have found. It's an exciting time.
"Who knows where it will lead? But it's the best time I've had in years and it's all for real."
Stardust joined the cast of Hollyoaks in 1995, starring for eight months as Greg Andersen, the father of original character Natasha.
