The song reached number two in the US charts and number three in the UK.

Ravenscroft was reportedly paid just £27 for the performance, but continued to receive tens of thousands of pounds of royalties every year.

Back in 2011, Ravenscroft told BC London 94.9 about the song: "I'm irritated because it's out of tune.

"Yeah, it's flat. By enough of a degree that it irritates me at best."

He added that he could not re-record it as he was not involved in the mixing of the track.

The sax riff was the subject of an infamous pop myth, where it was claimed that it was performed by Blockbusters host Bob Holness.

In his career, Ravenscroft went on to perform on Roger Waters's last Pink Floyd LP The Final Cut, and he also collaborated with Abba, Marvin Gaye and Daft Punk, among others.
