The Supreme Court is poised to rule on gay marriage once and for all in June, and no straight person seems to be more excited about this than “Girls” mastermind Lena Dunham — if only because it means she can finally marry her rocker boyfriend, Jack Antonoff.
“My boyfriend and I have always said we were going to wait until gay marriage was legal to get married, so literally the minute the headline came up I was like, ‘If it happens in April, put a ring on it! It’s time!’” Dunham told MTV News with a laugh. “I’m basically just using it as an excuse to get proposed to.”
Obviously Dunham — who was at the Sundance Film Festival to promote HBO’s documentary “It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise” with her friend/the film’s director Matt Wolf — was joking. She’s been a staunch public supporter of LGBT rights for years, and says she’s excited for all of her friends to have the same opportunities that she does.
“No, I’m thrilled, and Matt will attest to this — it’s not important to every one of my gay friends to be married, but it’s important to everyone that that right is available,” Dunham concluded.
HBO’s “It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise” is currently screening at the Sundance Film Festival.
