It’s Saint Patrick’s Day, and if you’re observing this holiday in the traditional manner, then you’re going to need a few good movies to watch while you nurse the inevitable hangover (or the one you already have from your St. Patty’s weekend pre-gaming.)
But just because you’re on your couch, feeling the barfy effects of too many car bombs, that doesn’t mean you can’t keep your viewing thematically appropriate! Below, we round up 13 movies that are totally perfect for St. Patrick’s Day, for one reason or another.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley
The Irish war for independence forms the backbone of this historical drama. It’s also kind of a downer, but after all the green beer you’ve had, you’ll never be awake for the ending anyway.
In Bruges
Irish actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson star as a pair of Irish hitmen on holiday in a picturesque European town that just doesn’t measure up to Dublin.
Peaky Blinders
Feel like a binge-watch? Enjoy renowned Irishman Cillian Murphy’s performance as a man who rules Victorian Birmingham’s criminal element with an iron fist… or in this case, a razored hat.
Drinking Buddies
You might as well call this movie “The People Who Will Still Be Passed Out In Your Living Room On March 18th.”
Morgan Murphy: Irish Goodbye
This aptly-titled standup special is perfect if you need a St. Patrick’s Day laugh.
The Crying Game
Looking for a quality St. Patty’s pick? The Irish Troubles form the backdrop of this thriller, which was nominated for a lot of Oscars.
Arrow
“Arrow” might seem like a weird pick for this list, but… he wears a green hood, he’s got endless financial resources, and considering that he’s still alive after three seasons of crimefighting in Star City, he’s clearly got luck on his side. You guys, seriously: Oliver Queen is obviously a leprechaun.
My Left Foot
Daniel Day-Lewis, who is Irish, stars in this biopic based on the life of Irish writer and artist Christy Brown. (If you’d rather see the actor as a sadistic oil tycoon threatening to drink Paul Dano’s milkshake, “There Will Be Blood” is on Netflix, too.)
Ella Enchanted
Although this movie is technically about a young lady who got a bad, unreturnable gift from her deranged fairy godmother, it’s also a grand little tour of the Irish countryside where it was filmed. Just check out the, uh, scenery in that gif.
The Haunting
Before he was Hollywood’s favorite Action Dad, Liam Neeson and his delightful Irish brogue starred in this haunted house movie based on the novel by Shirley Jackson.
The Secret of Kells
Irish lore abounds in this fun animated film with amazing Celtic style, about an abbey in a fairy forest under threat from Viking invaders.
Shrooms
If you prefer to partake in, er, other substances than beer on St. Patrick’s Day, perhaps you’ll enjoy this film about a group of students hunting for hallucinogenic mushrooms in the Irish countryside.
Leprechaun
It doesn’t get more St. Patrick’s appropriate than this movie, featuring Ireland’s most elusive fairytale creature… who, as it turns out, is a lot less cheerful and a lot more murderous than legend would have us believe.
