The 28-year-old Whiplash star shared a picture of his bulked up physique and impressive six-pack during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Speaking about being offered the role in the boxing biopic Bleed for This, Teller joked: "When they offered me the part, I was like, 'I can't grow a moustache, I'm not in very good shape..' I literally said, 'Are you sure?'"
Fallon produced a before-and-after shirtless snap of Teller flexing his biceps in the gym... which Teller let slip that Fallon had asked for.
When teased about his facial hair, he laughed: "I take a long to grow some... Facial hair, man! Everyone has their strengths - I'm a great dancer, I have great hair, I don't have weird body hair.
"I'd love to grow a thick Tom Selleck moustache but I physically can't."
The actor also spoke about Martin Scorsese working as a producer on the film, and praised its writer and director Ben Younger (Boiler Room, Prime) for an "incredible script".
The story follows Teller as Pazienza (also known as Vinny Paz), who shot to stardom before being involved in a near-fatal car crash.
Told that he would never walk again, he defied doctors' orders by returning to the gym under trainer Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart) and went on to win several more titles.
Teller reprises his role as Peter in the Divergent sequel Insurgent, released in UK and US cinemas this Friday (March 20).
