Richard Blackwood: 'EastEnders brought me back from the brink'

Richard Blackwood has revealed more about his previous experience of suffering from depression before landing a role in EastEnders.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Blackwood shares how his experiences of 10 years ago now make him a good example for others.

"When you're on TV, people don't think you've been through real things. But I went through a really bad phase," Blackwood said. "I lost everything, but I'm glad it happened because I've been able to tell others that no matter how bad things are, they'll improve."

Since landing the role of Vincent Hubbard, Blackwood has revealed that he's been able to turn his life around.

"Nobody seemed interested in giving me a break, then EastEnders came along and said, 'We'll take a chance on him.' Now everybody's paying attention!"

His EastEnders character was memorably introduced during EastEnders Live Week in February and is connected to both Ronnie Mitchell and Kim Fox, who has since been revealed to be the mother of his daughter, Pearl.

"Vincent is capable of dark deeds," he said of his character. "He's done things in the past that make him a person to be feared. Kim says she doesn't want anything to do with him because he killed someone. Has he? I'll leave that to the viewer's imagination."

EastEnders continues on Monday at 8pm on BBC One.
