Justin Timberlake reunited with *NSYNC for a show-stopping performance at the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 on Sunday (August 25).

The 'Bye Bye Bye' boyband took to the VMAs stage before Timberlake was given the prestigious 'Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award' by friend Jimmy Fallon.

Timberlake started the performance on his own with a medley of his early solo hits 'SexyBack', 'Like I Love You', 'My Love', 'Cry Me a River' and 'Rock Your Body'.

He was then joined on stage by Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, JC Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick to play the *NSYNC tracks 'Girlfriend' and 'Bye Bye Bye' in front of a rapturous crowd at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York.

This was the first public performance by the chart-topping boyband since they sang the US National Anthem at their *NSYNC Challenge for the Children in 2004.

Timberlake closed the set with solo versions of his latest hits 'Suit & Tie' and 'Mirrors'.

Fallon then appeared on the stage to give Timberlake the prestigious 'Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award', and listed off his many accomplishments.

"I don't deserve this award, but I'm not going to give it back," Timberlake initially teased.

He added more seriously: "Half of the Moonmen I ever won, I won with [*NSYNC]... I'm going to share this with them."

Rumours first swirled about a one-off *NSYNC reformation early last week.

Fatone and Bass both coyly addressed the rumours in the days leading up to the VMAs, but stopped short of issuing a firm denial or confirmation.

The group seemingly confirmed their involvement in the ceremony on Saturday (August 24) by launching an *NSYNC account on Twitter.

The MTV Video Music Awards opened up with Lady Gaga performing her new single 'Applause' for the very time.
