Directed by Kundan Shah, the original was a cult satire starring Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani as professional photographers who expose the corruption of Mumbai and become unwittingly embroiled in a murder.
Khan told IANS : "It is a cult film. The film is much more relevant even today than that time. You can watch it even after 50 years. It will always be relevant because our society will always be corrupt.
"It talks about things that are much more relevant today like politics and the way people are manipulated. People relate to the humour in this film.
"My children are fans of the film. My children are after me that I should do part two. They don't want me to lose the chance," he added.
The sequel will begin where the last film left off, with Shah and Khan in double roles.
The Life of Pi actor said he was excited about the prospect of working with Naseeruddin Shah.
"I am also very excited because of the director, the subject and Naseer sir. It would be fun... I still need to hear the second draft... we are still about to finalise certain things."
Khan said he was trying to strike a balance between Bollywood and Hollywood.
