The Square Enix executive explained that storage limitations are holding back the game's release on smartphones, but predicted that they may be overcome several years from now.
"Unfortunately, it's not that it's not impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy VII for mobile. It's that currently, space will be an issue. Phones won't be able to contain the space it takes. It's over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years," he told Shacknews .
Final Fantasy VII was originally released for PlayStation in 1997, and has since been ported to PC and reissued for current Sony hardware via the PlayStation Network.
Square Enix has previously released the early entries in the RPG series for iOS and Android devices, and is currently working on a port of Final Fantasy VI for smartphones.
The studio has also announced plans to port the first eight Dragon Quest games to mobiles, beginning with the original game this winter.
