Skype 's social media platforms have been hacked by a group claiming to be the Syrian Electronic Army.

The attackers advise users not to use email services provided by Skype's owner Microsoft, accusing the company of monitoring accounts.

"Don't use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to governments," the group wrote on Skype's Twitter feed and the chat application's official blog.

The SEA also posted its familiar emblem with the caption: "Syrian Electronic Army was here".

Microsoft has since removed the messages and assured users no personal user information was compromised by the attack.

"You may have noticed our social media properties were targeted today," the computing giant explained. "No user info was compromised. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

Microsoft is the latest in a string of cyber attacks which the SEA have claimed responsibility for. US president Barack Obama had a Twitter link replaced with a URL to a propaganda video in October 2013, while the Financial Times , The Guardian , Al Jazeera and BBC Weather are also previous victims.
