UK music, video sales rose in 2013, boosted by digital

2013's music and video sales in the UK were higher than 2012's after digital services helped boost figures.

Digital video sales, which includes revenue from iTunes, Netflix and Lovefilm, grew by 40% last year, while music streaming also grew by 33.7%.

BBC News reports that music streaming now accounts for almost 10% of revenue from recorded music.

However, physical formats still accounted for 56% of all sales of music, video and games in the UK, according to Entertainment Retailers Association figures.


Digital video made up 30% of 2013's total video sales of £2.06 billion, with physical sales of video dropping by 6.8%.


The digital entertainment market grew 4% from 2012's figure of £5.1 billion, to a value of £5.4 billion in 2013.


Skyfall sold 2.96 million copies last year, while compilation Now That's What I Call Music! 86 was the biggest-selling album of 2013, having sold 1.2 million copies.


Overall sales of music in the UK dropped by 0.5%, with physical sales falling by more than 7%.
