Philip Seymour Hoffman and Aaron Sorkin
In a write-up for Time magazine, Sorkin recounted a moment when Hoffman suggested that if they died from their drug habit, it might deter others from doing the same.
"'If one of us dies of an overdose, probably ten people who were about to won't'," the screenwriter quoted Hoffman as saying. "He meant that our deaths would make news and maybe scare someone clean."
Sorkin compared the encounters to "mini-AA meetings", in which Hoffman advised him to remain squeamish to needles.
"I told him I felt lucky because I'm squeamish and can't handle needles. He told me to stay squeamish."
The 52-year old - who also worked with Hoffman on 2011's Moneyball - described the late actor as a "kind, decent, magnificent, thunderous actor".

Hoffman was found dead on Sunday (February 2) of a suspected drug overdose
However, he refused to accept that Hoffman's death was due to an overdose of heroin, but heroin overall.
"We should stop implying that if he'd just taken the proper amount then everything would have been fine," Sorkin explained.
"He didn't die because he was partying too hard or because he was depressed - he died because he was an addict on a day of the week with a y in it."
The Hunger Games actor's autopsy was found inconclusive last night (February 5), meaning further tests will have to be done to determine the actor's cause of death.
A private funeral for family and close friends will be held tomorrow (February 7).
