The Oscar-winning actor was found at his home at 35 Bethune Street in Manhattan's West Village earlier today (February 2), New York City Police said.
According to the Wall Street Journal , Hoffman was discovered by a friend in his bathroom at 11.15am local time.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is currently investigating to determine the exact cause of death.
Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in 2005 film Capote, and also starred in Doubt, The Talented Mr Ripley and Boogie Nights.
More recently, the actor joined The Hunger Games film series. He starred as Plutarch Heavensbee in 2013's Catching Fire and is set to appear in Mockingjay - Part 1 later this year.
Hoffman also enjoyed a successful stage career, appearing in plays like Death of a Salesman, as well as working as a director. He was nominated for a Tony Award on three separate occasions.
