Speaking to Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music yesterday (March 6), Gott made the surprise announcement, although organisers behind the event have denied any knowledge of Morrissey's appearance.
In a statement, a Summer In The City spokesperson said: "The event organisers are unaware of any plans to put Morrissey on in Manchester at all this summer."
James are due to headline the second of two dates at Manchester's Castlefield Bowl on July 11, with special guests Starsailor. Meanwhile, the Pixies will take to the stage the day before, with the support of Royal Blood.
The details come as Cliff Richard and Tom Jones were recently announced as special guests for the singer's live dates in the US this coming May and June.
Morrissey is also expected to release his 10th studio album in the second half of 2014.
