Harington told GQ that a body double replaced him in one near-naked scene that saw his character Jon Show seduced by Ygritte (Rose Leslie).
"When it came down to it I had a broken ankle, so the only time you saw my ass, it wasn't my ass," he explained.
The 27-year-old added that it is "only right" that he be expected to participate in nude scenes for the HBO fantasy series.
"It's only right, if you're going to make a show where nudity and sex is a large part of it, that you be a part of that," he said.
Asked if he'd be happy to go full-frontal, he added: "I wouldn't say I'd be happy about it. It would have to be f**king well deserved."
Game of Thrones returns for its fourth season next month, with HBO and UK broadcaster Sky Atlantic simulcasting the first new episode.
