The drama is being developed with the BBC and is an adaptation of the 1993 John le Carre novel, with David Farr (Hanna, Spooks) to write.

The story follows British ex-soldier Jonathan Pine, who works as the night auditor of a luxurious hotel. He comes across a woman called Sophie who has documents which incriminate Richard Onslow Roper, a man who works on the black market and specialises in weapons.

When she is found dead, Pine goes undercover to expose Roper and avenge Sophie's death.

AMC has recently turned away from unscripted programming, choosing to focus on scripted original ideas like The Walking Dead and the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul.

Laurie hasn't been seen much on American TV screens since his departure from House, while The Night Manager marks Hiddleston's biggest US TV role to date.
