Sir Ian McKellen gets Freedom of London for work on gay rights

Sir Ian McKellen received the Freedom of the City of London in a special ceremony today (October 30).

The film and stage actor was recognised for his work on gay rights over the years.

He is a founding member of the gay campaign group Stonewall and also supports The Albert Kennedy Trust which helps homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youngsters.

He was presented with the award by Lord Mayor Fiona Woolf at the Guildhall.


One of McKellen's recent roles is in George Ezra's music video 'Listen to the Man'.


He is also appearing in Peter Jackson's final The Hobbit movie, The Battle of the Five Armies , to be released on December 12 in the UK and on December 17 in the US. Watch a trailer for the film below:
