The designer attended the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on Thursday (October 30) to pick up the lifetime achievement award for his work.
During the ceremony, Ive spoke about the Apple Watch, saying: "Even though Apple Watch does so many things, there are cultural, historical implications and expectations.
"That's why it's been such a difficult and humbling programme." (via The Wall Street Journal ).
Ive told the audience that creating a wrist wearable posed some challenges, as it is only suitable for "lightweight interactions" and "casual glancing".
The 47-year-old's focus on design was further revealed when he admitted that he didn't know Apple's recent financial results, adding: "I know they are high."
Museum director Neal Benezra said: "Ive is our generation's most innovative and influential figure in the field of industrial design - no other design mind has done more to transform the way we visualise and share information."
Ive recently described companies that copy Apple's designs as "lazy".
