Edge of Tomorrow follows Cruise as a soldier fighting a war against aliens and finds himself caught in a time loop, Deadline reports.
Stuck reliving the last day of the battle, Cruise's alter ego must find a way to escape.
Piven is slated to play the role of Col. Walter Marx in the action movie that has already completed a majority of the filming.
The actor's casting was reportedly planned in advance, as he is said to be currently shooting his role in the UK.
Edge of Tomorrow, formerly titled All You Need Is Kill , comes from director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity).
The film will hit theatres in the US on June 6, 2014 and the UK on May 30, 2014.
