The Jack Branning actor, who filmed his final scenes earlier this month, explained that BBC cutbacks have caused the quality of the Albert Square drama to dip.
"There's a bigger picture with all of the cuts at the BBC. They made big cuts about three years ago and that affected the whole community working on EastEnders," Maslen told the Daily Star Sunday .
"They obviously had to cut the number of actors and it has slowly affected the overall running of the show.
"EastEnders has definitely dipped. Corrie has been getting the attention - and rightly so. They're doing really, really well.
"They've had great stories and are keeping it true to what it should be. I think EastEnders lost that a little bit but that's the way it goes sometimes."
Samantha Womack and Scott Maslen.
The 42-year-old went on to praise new boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins, who recently replaced Lorraine Newman.
"Dominic is a very exciting and engaging character," he said. "When you're working on EastEnders it's a frontline acting job because you're producing so much that you need that kind of energy.
"If you don't have that, things take a dip. Everyone makes mistakes but they're rectifying them now. They've got to sort it out - and they are."
Jack Branning's exit airs in two weeks' time, with Maslen insisting that his character hasn't been killed off.
