'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here': Is it time for a rule change?

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! has never been healthier. The show bounced back on to screens last weekend like it was brand new, picking up a record-breaking 13m viewers for the opening of its 13th season. Apparently 13 is not such an unlucky number after all.

Ant and Dec prepare for the jungle ahead of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! returning to ITV.Ant and Dec have filmed a special promo that will be seen on ITV for the first time on Sunday evening.Ant and Dec are seen arriving in the ˜Australian Outback', and when Dec asks if a limo will be picking them up, Ant tells him, "We don't need a limo Dec. This year it's going to be a lot tougher, we need to live and breathe the outback.""I thought it was only supposed to be tougher for the celebrities," says Dec."When in Rome Declan, when in Rome," says Ant.Dec gets a shock when a tatty pick up truck pulls up and the driver asks if they are Ant and Dick. Dec is quick to correct the mispronunciation of his name. The boys jump on the back of the truck, only to find they are sharing their lift with a hungry crocodile called Gerald. The tongue-in-cheek promo aims to whet viewers' appetites for the fun that is soon to be had when I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! returns to ITV next month.

Ant & Dec are still on top form, and the line-up seems pretty good too. Already, Joey Essex is worming his way into people's hearts with his utter lack of common sense, and Laila Morse is proving that Big Mo is, well, a bit of a big mouth.

So far so good, right? The only thing is, there's just one niggle. One little thing that hasn't been fixed. Something that has been annoying fans for a while. Quite simply - it is that the same people do the Bushtucker Trials over and over again.

Technically, the viewers only really have themselves to blame; we're the ones voting for the celebrities to be subjected to critters and creeps. But the format of the show means that when we're voting, we haven't really seen enough of the campmates to decide who deserves a bit of a challenge.

Take the last episode, where a large part was devoted to Joey and Matthew's (hilarious) first trial, with little air time granted to the other contestants. Is it any surprise that the people who picked up the most public votes were the people we'd seen the most of? And so Joey and Matthew were put forward for their second trial, which was utterly predictable.

Don't get me wrong - they're easily the two most entertaining celebs on the show. But even saying that feels unfair, because I genuinely have no idea how Steve or Amy or David or Alfonso or Lucy would react while trying to get a bit of kangaroo for camp.

The repetitive nature of Bushtucker Trials can be brilliant. Katie Price eventually throwing in the towel after being nominated for six consecutive trials was enjoyably dramatic. But by last year, when Helen Flanagan was forced to do seven in a row (and was generally rubbish at all of them), things started to feel a little bit tired.

It looks like we're in for the same thing again this year. Joey and Matthew have proved to be brilliantly entertaining during Bushtucker Trials, winding each other up and having just the kind of horrified responses we tend to lap up. That's fine, but when are we going to get to know the other celebrities? Little snatches around the campfire aren't really enough - we need to see them being tested.

The thing is, it's so easy to fix this. All you have to do is introduce a rule which means that once a celebrity has been picked for a trial, they're immune from the next. That way, we could still see Joey jabbering every other day, but at least there'd be a bit of variety, and everyone would get to have a go.

Even the contestants themselves must be gagging for something to pass the time in the jungle. The 'Turntable of Terror' in the opening episode proved that they're all willing to try - even though Rebecca Adlington looked terrified and Alfonso Ribeiro got choked up. Joey and Matthew aren't the only ones who could keep us gripped and giggling.

This series of I'm a Celebrity looks like it could be a bit of a belter, even with the tiresome Amy/Joey will-they-won't-they-who-cares chucked in the mix. But if Joey and Matthew are the only ones we pay any attention to, things could get very boring, very quickly.

What do you think? Should I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! introduce a rule change? Or do you like things the way they are? Let us know below!

I'm a Celebrity continues tonight (November 20) at 9pm on ITV.
