This is Sheeran's second number one in six months, and the single takes over from Celine Dion's 'Think Twice', which took 13 weeks to reach number one in 1994.

"I'm not used to having number one singles and this is my favourite song on the album, my favourite song I've written, so I'm really proud it's getting this recognition," Sheeran said.

Taylor Swift on The Voice USA

Last week's number one, 'All About That Bass' by Meghan Trainor, moves down to number two, while Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off' moves from fifth position to third.

'Bang Bang' by Nicki Minaj, Jessie J and Ariana Grande stays at number four, as Jeremih's 'Don't Tell 'Em' rounds off the Top 5 tracks of the week.

Parra for Cuva claims this week's highest new entry with 'Wicked Games', featuring Anna Naklab, at number 6. The song is a reworking of Chris Isaak's 1990 hit 'Wicked Game'.

Calvin Harris press shot 2014.

Idina Menzel

Calvin Harris enters the chart at 23 with 'Open Wide' featuring Big Sean, while OneRepublic have two songs in the chart, 'I Lived' at 29 and the re-entering 'Love Runs Out' at 38.

Idina Menzel's 'Let It Go' also re-enters the chart at number 36, following Lauren Platt's rendition on last week's X Factor .
